United Way Day on the Hill 2011
I went to the United Way of Salt Lake's Day on the Hill two weeks ago on Thursday, February 24, 2011. I can't believe it's already been two weeks. The past two weeks have been quite busy. You can check my blog post on the United Way of Salt Lake's blog site here. My specific post is here. The reason why I've taken so long to post is the fact that I didn't bring my camera (for once). So, I was waiting for pictures. I ended up using the ones from their site. It started out with two other Young Leaders and a WPN (Women's Philanthropic Member). We met on the bus, went to the Senate Building to find the room, and started the day off with coffee and chatting.
We convened in the Spruce room for the event. Advocacy 101 went over the basics of how the Utah State Legislature works. Very educational for the beginning advocate.
After that there was an overview of the current legislation that the United Way of Salt Lake Supports and Opposes.
In the following session, Notes to the Legislators, they explained how to write notes and meet our legislators. This was a very informative and interactive part of the program that I enjoyed immensely. You take these approximately quarter size pieces of paper and write that you would like to meet your state House Representative or Senator. You put down your name, the time, and a brief description of why you want/need to talk to them. I wasn't able to meeting mine, but the other Young Leaders were able to meet theirs. It was very educational. I think everyone should have this experience. It was amazing. We went back to the Spruce Room in the state Senate building to eat lunch and wrap up with a Raise Your Hand for Education panel discussion.
During the panel discussion it made me realize how many difficult issues the teachers face within the public school system. I am very thankful for public education and teachers. I appreciate EVERYTHING they do for the children in their classes. I would love to stand up and applaud my kid's teachers for all of their hard work and dedication to their students including my own children.
